Amateur finds 700,000-year-old Java Man in German quarry

Hanover, Germany (ANTARA News/dpa) - Fragments of skull found in a German quarry have turned out to belong to Java Man, an early human previously thought to be native to Asia, triggering speculation that Asian hominids colonized Europe.

Alfred Czarnetzki, a University of Tuebingen professor, announced Thursday that the remains, found in 2002, were "at least 700,000 years old" and so like Java Man "that it could have been his twin."

The remains belong to the Homo erectus species, whereas modern humans are Homo sapiens.

Karl-Werner Frangenberg, a fossil-hunter, found part of the skullcap in 2002 at a gravel pit at Leinetal near Hanover. His wife, who shares the hobby, found part of the temple two years later.

The fragments, now believed to be the oldest human remains ever found in Germany, are on display in a Hanover museum.

Previously Germany's oldest remains were of another species, Homo heidelbergensis, found in 1907 and dated at 600,000 years old.

Czarnetzki admitted that dating the remains was inexact, but said he was convinced by the similarity to finds since 1891 on Java.

"It suggests the Asian ones spread to Europe," he said, adding that his article on the find had been accepted by the Journal of Human Evolution and would be published soon.

He said no DNA was in the fragments, but there had been some traces of protein.

Pertamina considering building refinery with Kuwaiti investor

07/17/08 16:56 Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State oil and gas company PT Pertamina is looking into the possibility of cooperating with a Kuwaiti investor to build an oil refinery to better ensure domestic fuel oil supplies.

"We have began discussing the planned construction of an oil refinery with a number of Middle Eastern investors, including from Kuwait," Pertamina President Director Ari H Soemarno said here on Thursday.

But he stopped short of revealing where the refinery would be set up and the amount of investment needed for the project.

Asked about Pertamina`s plan to build an oil refinery in Banten province in cooperation with the Iranian government, he said it would be built on a plot of land owned by state port operator PT Pelindo in the Bojanegara area.

"We are in the middle of making engineering preparations. And in August this year, the Iranian oil minister will come (to Indonesia to inspect the location)," he said.

He said the Banten oil refinery would be built in two stages.

"The Banten oil refiney will consist of two trains with each of them expected to process 150,000 barrels per day," he said.

Kabel Indonesia`s profit jumps 242 pct

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Publicly-listed electrical cable maker PT Kabel Indonesia Tbk said on Thursday its net profit in the first half of 2008 jumped 242 percent to Rp28.8 billion from Rp11.9 billion in the same period last year.

Operating profit rose to Rp46.2 billion from Rp31.6 billion due in part to a rise in sales, the company`s operations director, Lie T H, said.

Sales in the first semester of 2008 increased by 47.6 percent to Rp796.9 billion from Rp539.8 billion in the same period last year, he said.

He said a decline in interest expenses to Rp0.1 billion from Rp7.3 billion as a result of the debt restructuring program leading to lower-than-expected debt principal and interest rate at the end of 2007 also contributed to the first-half net profit.

He said a Rp4.7 billion rise in profit from difference of the rupiah`s exchange rate against the dollar also raised the net profit.

Can D-8 Nation Boost Their Internal Trade Ties??? Or is it Just A Dream??

Summit of the Group of Eight Islamic Developing Countries (D-8) provides opportunity for Islamic countries to focus on trade and economic issues.

According to Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister, Abdul Rahim Bakri, this year's summit is meaningful especially for the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), as trade and economic issues would take center stage.

The theme of the summit, "Facing Global Challenges through Innovative Cooperation", aims at fostering economic cooperation among member countries to facilitate trade.

Another issue given attention in the discussions was the energy crisis and the rising food costs, with D-8 members Indonesia, Iran, and Nigeria among the world's top oil producing countries.

"The development of the halal industry which has the potential to become a trillion dollar industry will be given priority, especially in Islamic finance and takaful development," The Malaysian official said.

The global market for halal products and services is estimated to be worth USD 42.3 trillion (USD 1.00=RM3.26).

Besides Indonesia, Iran, and Nigeria, the D-8 comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey.

The D-8 was set up as a forum in 1997 to increase cooperation in various fields towards improving the economic status of memberstates.

Wait For Outcome Of Monetary Policy Meeting, Says Dr Zeti

By Ahmad Farizal Hajat

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- "You have to wait and see," that's what Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said when asked to comment on whether there would be adjustments to the overnight policy rate (OPR) at its next monetary policy meeting.

Many analysts expect some adjustments to the OPR to cushion the economy against inflationary pressures in view of the increase in petrol and diesel prices recently.

Some local financial institutions have also raised their lending rates, adding speculation to possible adjustments.

Dr Zeti was responding to reporters on the sidelines of the 6th Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries (D-8) Summit here today.

The central bank's policy meeting is scheduled for later this month.

The OPR was kept unchanged at 3.5 percent at its last meeting.

Inflation, as measured by the consumer price index, was at a 22-month high at 3.8 percent year-on-year in May.

A More Promising Future

The Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries (D-8) has a more promising future now as it is more institutionalised and structured compared to what it was 11 years ago.

"The grouping has a permanent secretariat in Istanbul, Turkey, headed by an elected secretary general who will assume the post for four years," Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan told reporters on the sidelines of the D-8 summit here today.

Property Booming in Iran

Property Booming in Iran

June 1, 2008

Negar Ehteshami has just paid the equivalent of R46 million in rials in cash for a luxurious apartment. But her new home is not in New York or London, it is in the capital of Iran.

"I am a millionaire because of this apartment," says Ehteshami, an interior designer from a rich Iranian family who has always lived in an affluent northern Tehran neighbourhood.

"But nothing else in my life resembles the life of a millionaire."

Moving her Hermes handbag out of the way as she closes the window of her 300m2 apartment, Ehteshami says. "Here I feel [as though] I am inside a helicopter. I can see the whole city."

Her tale has echoes in much of the West, where a surge in house prices has been fuelled partly by easy lending. In Iran, however, people are still being priced out of the market.

Mansour Bagheri, a businessman living in Germany since 1980, hopes to make a fortune from this business model.

"I get loans in Europe, where I live, and buy apartments in Tehran. I am all set to become super rich," he says.

The property boom in the fourth-largest oil producer has been powered by the economic policies of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since he was elected in 2005, economic analysts say.

Last year house prices more than doubled, after rising by 65 percent in 2006 and more than 50 percent in 2005. With interest rates below inflation, some economists see huge scope for prices to keep rising as Iranians seek a store of value in property.

Economist Reza Abdizadeh said: "The high prices might be a bubble. It might be fake and illogical, but it is a fact. Historically, housing prices have never dropped in Iran. The government might be able to stop prices from rising, but will not succeed in lowering them."

Shortly after Ahmadinejad was elected, his government began lending substantial sums to individuals and companies that had plans to create jobs.

The "quick-impact loans", which were intended to reduce unemployment from an official rate exceeding 10 percent, alarmed many, including Central Bank of Iran governor Tahmasb Mazaheri, because such a stimulus is also a classic trigger for inflation hikes.

Economist Saeed Leylaz said: "It has created problems … in effect the main issue is massive floating capital."

The government has said that those who used the money to invest in property and not to create jobs would be banned from obtaining loans for five years.

Criticised by politicians and economists for his populist economic policies, Ahmadinejad cut bank interest rates despite strong liquidity growth last year. They are now well below inflation, currently above 20 percent a year.

Ali Afshari, a real estate agent, said: "When there is no other opportunity to invest, and interest rates of banks are around 16 percent, naturally money flows to property."

The government has tried unsuccessfully to rein in prices.

With one million prospective owners coming on to the market each year and Iran capable of building only 600 000 new homes a year, conservative politician Mohammad Khoshchehreh said there was a shortage of 1.6 million homes.

Hamid Taghavi, a government employee with two children, sold his 60m2 apartment in Tehran to pay for his son's wedding last year. It has since become difficult for him even to rent a much smaller apartment.

"I wanted to buy a smaller apartment with the rest of the money, but it seems at the age of 55 I will be homeless in less than two years," he said.

Stoking the fire, some property brokers and analysts forecast a huge jump in prices in the coming months amid mounting international pressure on Iran to suspend its nuclear work.

The UN has imposed three sets of sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear programme. In addition, Washington has blacklisted three of Iran's main state banks and, under US pressure, European banks have also pulled out.

Mehrdad Divani, a broker expecting yet more Iranian capital to go into bricks and mortar, said: "Low interest rates, strong housing demand … and the threat of additional UN sanctions on Iran will fuel property prices."

Foreign capital has played a large role in the market's success, because of money repatriated by Iranians living abroad, which analysts believe has increased since Iran was first hit by UN sanctions in 2006.

Economist Bagher Safarian said: "Fear that assets may be frozen because of the nuclear row as well as the economic recession in the West have accelerated money flows to Iran."

Mansour Khalilian, an engineer involved in mass construction of houses in southern Tehran, also saw prices rising even more this year as construction booms occurred in much of the country.

"People have money and they do not trust Iran's banking system because of political and economic instability," he said. "Also because the dollar and gold are losing value, people prefer to invest in property."

Among those hit by rising prices are Mahmoud Rahimi, a 35-year-old government employee, and his wife Simin. He said it was now impossible for them to buy a small apartment in Tehran.

"If we do not eat, drink and basically do not spend a penny for the next 40 years, then maybe we can afford to buy a 20m2 house" said Rahimi. "If, of course, prices do not increase."
